Responsibilities
Engage with customers warmly to provide informed book recommendations and promote key store initiatives, including membership programs and select titles.
Operate point-of-sale registers efficiently while troubleshooting basic technology issues across tablets and store systems.
Mentor and train newer booksellers and cafe staff by sharing operational best practices and providing constructive, informal feedback.
Maintain store presentation, visual merchandising, and cleanliness across diverse sections such as fiction, children's books, toys, and media.
Assist with receiving, unpacking, and accurate shelving of inventory to ensure smooth product availability.
Apply loss prevention strategies and de-escalation techniques to handle store safety and customer concerns appropriately.
Qualifications
Demonstrated experience in retail sales, customer service, or bookstore environments.
Broad familiarity with varied reading categories and standard retail merchandising practices.
Proficiency in operating store technology, point-of-sale systems, and inventory search tools.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills to support team mentorship and customer engagement.
Physical capability to handle prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting, and walking during shifts.
Prior supervisory, peer mentorship, or retail training experience in a high-volume store.
Familiarity with bookstore management systems such as BookMaster.
Flexibility to support neighboring store locations within the regional cluster if needed.

Full-time, fully on-site position located at the Chicago, Illinois bookstore.
