Recreation Specialist /Student Government Advisor: Wednesday to Saturday 11:30am-10:30pm

Overview

In this role, you will organize and oversee recreational, athletic, and non-vocational programs for socioeconomically disadvantaged youth aged 16 to 24 at the San Jose Job Corps Center. You will serve as a mentor and positive role model, guiding students through center life, fostering leadership skills, and ensuring their overall safety and well-being. Additionally, you will advise the Student Government Association (SGA) by assisting with elections, supervising student-run activities, and coordinating evening leadership development sessions. Working directly on-site, you will collaborate with center staff to maintain a structured, safe, and engaging environment that promotes student retention and personal growth. Your responsibilities will extend to managing recreational facilities, leading off-center excursions, documenting student progress in case management systems, and facilitating emergency interventions when necessary.

Responsibilities

• Plan, organize, and direct on-center and off-center recreational, athletic, and avocational activities for students.
• Advise the Student Government Association by overseeing elections, managing canteen operations, and facilitating evening leadership curricula.
• Monitor student behavior, provide ongoing mentorship and counseling, and maintain detailed case notes in the reporting system.
• Conduct daily safety inspections of recreational areas and report any facility or hazard issues promptly.
• Supervise student clubs and coordinate guest speakers and team-building events to support extended leadership training.
• Ensure recreational equipment is properly maintained, inventoried, and compliant with Department of Labor standards.

Qualifications

• Associate degree or at least one year of experience working with youth populations.
• Valid state driver's license with the ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of hire.
• Current CPR and First Aid certifications or the ability to obtain and maintain them upon hire.
• Strong interpersonal, motivational, and communication skills suitable for working with young adults aged 16 to 24.

Nice to have

• Bachelor's degree in recreation, education, human services, or a related field.
• Current Lifeguard Certification and experience supervising aquatic activities.
• Existing Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for transporting students on bus trips.
• Background in sports coaching, performing arts, or arts and crafts instruction.

Work environment

• On-site position located at the Job Corps center in San Jose, California.
• Fixed full-time schedule working Wednesday through Saturday from 11:30 AM to 10:30 PM.
• Active, student-facing environment involving both indoor facility oversight and outdoor recreational supervision.
• Occasional travel required for off-center student trips and recreational excursions.
