CDL A, Driving Instructor

Overview

In this role, you will transition your professional driving expertise into coaching and mentoring the next generation of commercial drivers. You will be responsible for preparing students to successfully pass their commercial licensing examinations and develop safe, lifelong road habits. Your daily instructional scope includes conducting training across pre-trip vehicle inspections, basic control skills testing, and comprehensive over-the-road driving maneuvers. You will work collaboratively within a dedicated training team, using structured instructional methods and after-action reviews to evaluate student progress. Beyond in-cab and range instruction, you will manage operational documentation on digital devices, identify vehicle maintenance needs, and uphold safety regulations across the training program.

Responsibilities

• Instruct students on diesel-powered commercial vehicle operations, including straight-line backing, offset parking, alley-docking, and parallel parking.
• Train students to successfully complete comprehensive pre-trip vehicle inspections and basic control skills testing.
• Supervise and guide students through live over-the-road driving sessions while reinforcing industry safety habits and defensive driving techniques.
• Conduct after-action reviews following training exercises to provide constructive feedback and track student competency.
• Identify and report vehicle maintenance deficiencies, performing minor repairs when necessary to ensure fleet safety.
• Utilize computers and tablets to complete operational documentation, track attendance, and record training milestones.

Qualifications

• Valid, current Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL A).
• Minimum of two years of verifiable commercial driving experience or relevant military driving experience.
• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Proficiency in operating diesel-powered commercial vehicles and performing advanced backing and parking maneuvers.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interpret and explain transportation regulations.

Nice to have

• Prior experience in formal driver education, corporate training, or mentorship within the transportation industry.
• Familiarity with Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) regulations and state commercial licensing agency testing standards.
• Basic mechanical aptitude for diagnosing and addressing minor commercial vehicle maintenance issues.

Work environment

• Full-time, fully on-site position operating on training ranges, in classrooms, and inside commercial vehicles.
• Active, hands-on instructional setting requiring daily outdoor work in various weather conditions and road environments.
• Standard full-time working schedule of approximately 40 hours per week.
