CDL A, Driving Instructor

Overview

In this role, you will transition from being on the road to mentoring the next generation of professional truck drivers. You will be responsible for teaching future drivers the essential skills, safety habits, and confidence required to succeed in the trucking industry, focusing on both technical maneuvers and regulatory knowledge. Your work will directly impact the safety and quality of the workforce entering the commercial transportation field. You will work as part of a supportive training team, guiding students through vehicle inspections, basic skills testing, and over-the-road driving. Beyond technical instruction, you will serve as a professional role model, providing feedback through after-action reviews and ensuring that all trainees are prepared to meet rigorous state licensing requirements.

Responsibilities

• Mentor future professional drivers to develop necessary technical skills and safety habits.
• Conduct comprehensive training on vehicle inspections and basic skills testing.
• Instruct students on over-the-road driving maneuvers including straight-line backing and alley-docking.
• Evaluate student performance and conduct after-action reviews to improve learning outcomes.
• Utilize computers and tablets to document student progress and manage daily training operations.
• Identify vehicle maintenance deficiencies and perform minor repairs as needed.
• Prioritize daily workloads to ensure all students receive adequate instruction time.

Qualifications

• You must hold a valid and current Class A Commercial Driver's License.
• You need at least two years of verifiable professional driving experience.
• A high school diploma or G.E.D. is required for this instructional position.
• You must demonstrate proficiency in maneuvers such as offset parking and parallel parking.
• Strong oral and written communication skills are necessary to effectively coach students.
• You must have the ability to read and comprehend complex regulatory documents and reference materials.

Nice to have

• Previous experience in a coaching or mentorship role is highly valued.
• Military experience is considered a plus and may be counted toward your driving experience requirements.
• Familiarity with FMSCA Entry Level Driver Training standards will give you a competitive edge.
