Overview
In this senior-level role, you will lead the design and implementation of embedded software for advanced unmanned aircraft systems. You will be responsible for integrating complex sensors and processors into flight environments while ensuring the reliability of safety-critical systems used in defense and aerospace applications. Your work will bridge the gap between low-level firmware and high-level autonomous functionality, contributing directly to next-generation flight capabilities. You will operate as a technical leader within a cross-functional team, working alongside mechanical and electrical engineers to deliver high-quality systems. Beyond your individual technical contributions, you will provide critical mentorship to junior engineers and help guide the architectural direction of new projects. This position offers you the opportunity to see your code move from development into real-world flight test environments.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement software for embedded devices and systems on unmanned aircraft.
- Write and test software to integrate sensors, autopilots, and radios into flight hardware.
- Lead the planning and development phases for new programs and UAS projects.
- Troubleshoot and isolate complex software issues using oscilloscopes and logic analyzers.
- Collaborate with mechanical and electrical engineering disciplines to ensure system harmony.
- Participate in rigorous design and peer reviews to maintain high standards of software quality.
- Mentor junior teammates to support their professional growth and technical development.
Qualifications
- Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- At least 12 years of experience developing embedded software for real-time, safety-critical systems.
- Expert-level proficiency in C and C++ within a real-time embedded environment.
- Extensive experience with real-time operating systems such as VxWorks or FreeRTOS.
- Strong technical understanding of GPS, IMU, and other navigational constructs.
- Ability to read electrical hardware schematics and use hardware debugging equipment.
Nice to have
- Proficiency in using MATLAB and Simulink for system modeling and development.
- Advanced experience with CAN bus, SPI, 1553, and serial communication protocols.
- Demonstrated history of leadership in high-performing engineering teams.
