Master Mechanic I (or Mechanic*) - City

Overview

In this role, you will serve as a high-level technician for the City of Oklahoma City's Fleet Management Division, taking on the responsibility of diagnosing and repairing complex gasoline and diesel equipment malfunctions. You will play a pivotal role in maintaining the city's diverse vehicle fleet while providing essential technical on-the-job training and guidance to other maintenance staff to ensure operational efficiency.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose and provide comprehensive service for various gasoline and diesel automotive equipment malfunctions.
• Perform major mechanical repairs using specialized tools and techniques to ensure equipment safety and reliability.
• Prepare accurate repair cost estimates and manage the creation of detailed service orders for fleet maintenance.
• Provide technical on-the-job training and verbal instructions to co-workers and less experienced mechanics.
• Interpret technical sketches, diagrams, and manufacturer manuals to guide complex repair procedures.
• Maintain accurate records of all maintenance performed and parts used during the repair process.
• Communicate technical information effectively to city employees and department heads regarding vehicle status.

Qualifications

• You must possess a High School Diploma, GED, or an equivalent educational credential.
• You are required to hold a valid Class A Commercial Driver License or a Class B with Hazmat for Fire Department assignments.
• You must have a current ASE Master Automobile Certification or ASE Master Medium-Heavy Truck Certification.
• You need the physical strength to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds regularly.
• You must demonstrate the ability to diagnose malfunctions in both gasoline and diesel engines independently.
• You are required to provide your own set of hand tools as specified by the department.

Nice to have

• Experience working within a municipal fleet or large-scale government maintenance operation is preferred.
• Demonstrated leadership ability or experience mentoring junior mechanics is highly valued.
• Additional ASE certifications beyond the required Master level are considered a plus.

Work environment

• This is an on-site position based in Oklahoma City, requiring work in both indoor shop and outdoor environments.
• You will work one of three eight-hour shifts, which may include holidays, weekends, and overtime.
• The work involves exposure to heat, cold, fumes, loud noises, and occasionally cramped or awkward positions.
• Local travel is frequently required to reach various city equipment sites or departmental locations.
