DV Shelter Program Assistant (Part-Time, Sat/Sun)

Overview

In this part-time weekend role, you will provide critical support and crisis intervention to survivors of domestic violence within an emergency shelter environment. You will serve as a primary point of contact for the 24/7 hotline, offering trauma-informed advocacy, safety planning, and resource referrals to individuals in high-stress situations. Your work ensures that the shelter remains a safe, organized, and empowering space for residents as they navigate their journey toward safety and independence. You will manage the full lifecycle of resident support, from conducting initial intakes and orientations to coordinating ongoing case management and basic needs. By maintaining health and safety standards and facilitating house meetings, you will help foster a collaborative and supportive community culture. This position requires a high degree of empathy and professional boundaries, as you will be working directly with vulnerable populations and potentially dealing with secondary trauma in a fast-paced, high-stimulation setting.

Responsibilities

• Manage incoming 24/7 hotline calls by providing crisis intervention, safety planning, and emotional support to survivors and community partners.
• Complete shelter intake assessments and orientations within 24 hours of a resident's arrival to ensure immediate access to services.
• Coordinate transportation, basic supplies, and advocacy appointments to help program participants meet their daily needs.
• Maintain accurate and confidential client records within the agency database in compliance with state statutes and safety standards.
• Facilitate weekly house meetings and educational groups focused on the dynamics of power, control, and personal well-being.
• Perform daily facility walk-throughs and safety checks to ensure the emergency shelter meets all health and regulatory requirements.
• Monitor inventory levels for food and essential supplies, assisting with the distribution of donations and order fulfillment.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED coupled with at least one year of experience in crisis support, residential services, or emergency response.
• Proven ability to de-escalate conflicts and manage critical events using a trauma-informed approach.
• Strong interpersonal and written communication skills for effective documentation and team collaboration.
• Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation for travel between shelter and outreach locations.
• Successful completion of a level two background screening as required by Florida state regulations.

Nice to have

• Bilingual language skills to better serve a diverse population of survivors.
• Prior experience working specifically with at-risk or culturally specific populations in a non-profit setting.
• Knowledge of Florida domestic violence statutes and the victim compensation application process.

Work environment

• On-site work at an emergency shelter located in Martin County or Indian River County, Florida.
• Part-time schedule consisting of Saturday and Sunday shifts from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm.
• High-stimulation, fast-paced environment that requires the ability to handle noise and unexpected emergencies.
• Collaborative team setting involving regular case staffing and supervision meetings.
