Caregiver/DSP

Overview

In this role, you will play a vital part in the lives of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities by providing daily support, mentoring, and essential care. Working within a group home or day program setting, you will focus on teaching life skills that promote independence and help individuals integrate more fully into their communities. Your work will directly impact their quality of life through consistent engagement and compassionate assistance.

Responsibilities

• Provide daily mentoring and hygiene assistance to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in residential or day program environments.
• Teach essential life skills including budgeting, meal preparation, grocery shopping, and personal care to foster individual independence.
• Support individuals in understanding their rights, practicing safety awareness, and utilizing community resources effectively.
• Facilitate and participate in leisure activities such as Special Olympics, sports, dances, and social gatherings.
• Assist individuals in developing vocational skills, managing break times, and building professional relationships with coworkers.
• Monitor medical needs and sensory requirements to ensure a structured and safe environment for all participants.
• Maintain accurate documentation of progress and daily activities while communicating effectively with the support team.

Qualifications

• You must hold a high school diploma or an accredited GED.
• You need a valid driver's license with a good driving record containing fewer than four infractions.
• You must have dependable transportation and provide proof of valid auto insurance.
• You are required to have the physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds or one-quarter of your own body weight.
• You must be available to attend a mandatory two-week daytime orientation and certification program upon hire.
• You must possess strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively support individuals and coordinate with staff.

Nice to have

• Prior experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Home Health Aide (HHA), or Behavior Technician is beneficial.
• Knowledge of behavior modification techniques and the specific needs of individuals with autism or developmental disabilities is a plus.
• Experience in special education, psychology, or rehabilitation services can help you excel in this role.
• Previous work in human services or as a skills trainer is highly regarded.

Work environment

• The position is based on-site in Wichita, Kansas, within group homes or day program facilities.

• Various shifts are available, including traditional day hours, evenings, and overnight schedules with consistent weekly rotations.
• The role involves active participation in community outings and physical assistance with personal care tasks.
