Recreation Specialist /Student Government Advisor: Wednesday to Saturday 11:30am-10:30pm

Overview

In this role, you will be responsible for organizing and supervising a variety of recreational and non-vocational activities for youth aged 16-24 within the Job Corps program. You will serve as a vital mentor and role model, helping socioeconomically disadvantaged students adjust to center life while ensuring their safety and well-being through constant supervision and behavior modification techniques. Your work directly impacts student retention and personal growth by creating a supportive environment for extracurricular engagement.

Responsibilities

• Organize and direct a diverse schedule of recreation and non-vocational activities for assigned students.
• Advise the Student Government Association by facilitating meetings, supervising elections, and providing performance feedback to student leaders.
• Provide mentorship and behavior modification counseling to help students adapt to the center environment.
• Maintain accurate documentation of student behavior, progress, and safety incidents using the CIS case note system.
• Conduct safety checks of work areas and supervise students during off-center recreational trips.
• Coordinate guest speakers and implement a monthly evening leadership curriculum for student trainees.
• Ensure all recreational equipment is maintained and perform quarterly property inventory counts.

Qualifications

• You must hold at least an Associate's degree or have one year of professional experience working with youth populations.
• A valid State driver's license is required to fulfill transport and supervision duties.
• You must possess or be able to obtain CPR and First Aid certifications to ensure student safety.
• You are required to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six months of your start date.
• Excellent communication skills are necessary to effectively motivate and relate to the student population.
• You must demonstrate a high energy level and enthusiasm for coordinating group activities.

Nice to have

• A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as education, social work, or recreation is preferred.
• Prior experience in sports coaching, performing arts, or arts and crafts is highly valued.
• Possession of a current Lifeguard certification is a significant advantage for supervising water activities.

Work environment

• This is a full-time, on-site position located at the San Jose Job Corps center.
• The standard work schedule is Wednesday through Saturday, from 11:30 am to 10:30 pm.
• You will work in a dynamic campus setting that includes fitness centers, student stores, and outdoor recreation areas.
• The role involves both indoor administrative tasks and outdoor physical supervision of sports and events.
