Technical Proof-of-Concept Developer
Creates functional prototypes for early-stage startups to validate concepts and secure initial investment.
Overview
This career centers on the high-speed execution of software projects where the primary goal is speed to market rather than long-term scalability. The day-to-day rhythm involves heavy coding, architectural experimentation, and frequent iterations based on immediate feedback from founders or investors. It is a highly creative yet disciplined field that requires the ability to ignore technical perfectionism in favor of delivering visible, interactive results that prove a specific value proposition.
The environment is characterized by high ambiguity and shifting requirements as a startup searches for product-market fit. Professionals in this space solve problems ranging from integrating disparate APIs to building custom interfaces that simulate complex backend logic. Success in this role depends on a broad horizontal knowledge of full-stack technologies and the ability to pivot between different programming languages or frameworks depending on the specific needs of the prototype.
Responsibilities
- Develop functional web or mobile prototypes from initial wireframes and product requirements.
- Integrate third-party services and APIs to simulate complex backend functionality without building bespoke systems.
- Present technical demonstrations to venture capitalists and angel investors to facilitate fundraising efforts.
- Advise startup founders on technical feasibility and potential development roadblocks for their core concepts.
- Select appropriate tech stacks that allow for maximum development speed and future modularity.
- Iterate on software features rapidly based on user testing and stakeholder feedback loops.
- Document technical debt and architectural decisions to facilitate the hand-off to permanent engineering teams.
Qualifications
- Five or more years of experience in full-stack software development across multiple frameworks.
- Demonstrated ability to build and deploy functional applications within tight timelines of two to four weeks.
- Proficiency in modern frontend technologies such as React, Vue, or Flutter.
- Experience with serverless architectures and cloud infrastructure providers like AWS or Firebase.
- Strong portfolio of past projects showing the transition from concept to working software.
Nice to have
- Prior experience as a technical founder or early employee at a venture-backed startup.
- Advanced knowledge of rapid prototyping tools and low-code/no-code integration platforms.
- Background in UI/UX design to ensure prototypes are visually compelling for investor presentations.
Work environment
- Work is predominantly remote and conducted through asynchronous communication channels.
- The culture is fast-paced and deadline-driven, often aligned with venture capital funding cycles.
- Standard tools include Git for version control, Docker for containerization, and various rapid deployment platforms.
- Collaboration occurs directly with non-technical founders, requiring clear communication of technical trade-offs.
Benefits & growth
- Compensation often includes a mix of high hourly consulting rates and early-stage equity grants.
- The role provides exposure to diverse industries and cutting-edge technologies through a high volume of projects.
- Career progression often leads to Chief Technology Officer (CTO) roles or specialized technical consulting.
- Opportunities exist to build a significant professional network within the global venture capital ecosystem.
