Spatial UX / AR-VR Product Designer
Creates intuitive user interfaces and interactive experiences for augmented, virtual, and mixed reality environments.
Overview
This career bridges the gap between traditional two-dimensional interface design and the complexities of physical space. The day-to-day rhythm involves prototyping immersive environments, testing spatial audio, and refining hand-tracking or controller-based interactions. It requires a deep understanding of human perception, such as depth, field of view, and motion sickness, to ensure comfort and usability in virtual settings.
Success in this field often comes to those who enjoy solving ambiguous problems where established design patterns do not yet exist. The work is highly collaborative, requiring constant communication with hardware engineers and software developers to align design visions with technical constraints. It is a technical design role that demands both creative world-building and rigorous attention to accessibility and ergonomic standards.
Responsibilities
- Translate complex functional requirements into three-dimensional wireframes and interactive prototypes.
- Define the visual language and user interface components for immersive applications.
- Collaborate with engine developers to implement assets in Unity or Unreal Engine.
- Conduct usability testing sessions within VR headsets to identify ergonomic friction points.
