Remote CDI Specialist
Reviews electronic medical records to ensure clinical documentation accurately reflects patient severity and diagnoses.
Overview
The daily rhythm of this career centers on the meticulous analysis of electronic health records and clinical data. Specialists spend their hours scrutinizing patient charts, identifying gaps in documentation, and issuing queries to physicians to clarify diagnoses or procedures. This work requires a high degree of concentration and the ability to interpret clinical indicators such as lab results and vital signs to ensure they align with the recorded medical narrative.
Success in this role depends on a balance of clinical knowledge and administrative precision. The environment is data-driven and production-oriented, often involving strict daily quotas for chart reviews. It suits individuals who enjoy independent problem-solving and deep analytical work within a digital environment, as the majority of interactions occur through messaging platforms and query software rather than in-person clinical rounds.
Responsibilities
- Perform concurrent and retrospective reviews of electronic medical records for inpatient or outpatient cases.
- Initiate electronic queries to clinicians to clarify ambiguous, incomplete, or conflicting documentation.
- Verify that the assigned Clinical Modification and Procedure Coding System codes accurately reflect the patient status.
- Collaborate with medical coding teams to resolve discrepancies between clinical evidence and final billing codes.
