Responsibilities
- Interpret detailed prescriptions and measurements provided by clinical prosthetists to guide fabrication.
- Cast and modify plaster molds of patient limbs to create the foundation for custom sockets.
- Utilize vacuum-forming techniques to shape thermoplastics and lamination methods for composite materials.
- Assemble structural components including pylon systems, joints, and feet to complete the prosthetic device.
- Perform routine maintenance and complex repairs on existing prosthetic devices to ensure patient safety.
- Collaborate with clinical staff to make fine adjustments to the fit and alignment of the prosthesis.
- Maintain detailed records of materials used and fabrication steps taken for quality control and billing.
Qualifications
- Completion of a secondary education program with a focus on technical or mechanical skills.
- A technical certificate or associate degree in prosthetics and orthotics technology.
- Proficiency in operating industrial machinery such as band saws, sanding machines, and vacuum presses.
- Knowledge of anatomy and physiology relevant to limb structure and movement.
- Certification from a recognized national board such as the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics and Pedorthics.
- Experience working with hazardous materials and adherence to strict laboratory safety protocols.
