Responsibilities
- Patrol remote wilderness areas on foot, horseback, or by boat to ensure compliance with land use regulations.
- Lead search and rescue operations for lost or injured visitors in difficult terrain.
- Perform maintenance on backcountry trails, bridges, and campsites using primitive hand tools.
- Monitor wildlife populations and sensitive plant communities to document ecological health.
- Educate wilderness users on Leave No Trace principles and permit requirements.
- Respond to and manage initial attacks on small-scale backcountry wildfires.
- Maintain radio communication and log detailed reports of field observations and incidents.
Qualifications
- Bachelor degree in forestry, natural resource management, or a related biological science.
- Current certification as a Wilderness First Responder or Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician.
- Extensive experience in multi-day backcountry navigation and survival techniques.
- Proven proficiency in the operation and maintenance of primitive hand tools and radio equipment.
- Valid driver license and the ability to pass rigorous physical fitness standards.
- Background in law enforcement or resource protection protocols.
Nice to have
- Advanced certification in technical rope rescue or swiftwater rescue.
- Experience with pack animal handling and equestrian travel in rugged terrain.
- Previous service as a wildland firefighter or lead forestry technician.
