Major Incident Manager
Restores critical IT services following major disruptions while managing stakeholder communications and process recovery.
Overview
The daily reality of this career revolves around high-pressure situation management and technical orchestration. When a major outage occurs, the manager takes command of a bridge call, bringing together engineers, vendors, and business leaders to diagnose and resolve the issue. The rhythm is unpredictable, shifting from calm periods of process improvement to intense, time-critical sessions where every minute of downtime has a measurable cost to the organization. Success depends on the ability to remain composed under pressure and translate complex technical jargon into clear business impact updates.
Beyond the immediate crisis, this role focuses on the structural health of IT operations through post-incident reviews and trend analysis. Managers investigate the root causes of failures to prevent recurrence and refine the incident response framework. People who thrive in this environment generally possess a rare combination of diplomatic communication skills and a broad understanding of cloud infrastructure, networking, and software development lifecycles. It is a role defined by leadership through influence rather than direct reporting lines, requiring the ability to manage diverse teams toward a singular goal of service restoration.
