Bookbinder/Book Conservator

Overview

Responsibilities

• Assess the condition of books and archival documents to determine appropriate conservation or binding strategies.
• Perform structural repairs on book blocks using traditional sewing methods and archival-grade materials.
• Consolidate fragile paper and leather surfaces using specialized adhesives and chemical treatments.
• Construct custom protective enclosures and boxes to prevent further environmental degradation of rare items.
• Document all conservation interventions through detailed reports and high-resolution photography for archival records.
• Maintain and calibrate specialized equipment including nipping presses, board shears, and heated finishing tools.
• Research historical binding styles and material provenance to ensure restoration accuracy.

Qualifications

• A graduate degree in conservation, library science, or a related field with a focus on material culture.
• Extensive portfolio of completed binding or restoration projects demonstrating technical proficiency.
• Deep knowledge of organic chemistry as it relates to the aging of paper, leather, and adhesives.
• Advanced manual dexterity and the ability to use precision hand tools for extended periods.
• Familiarity with ethical standards and documentation practices established by professional conservation bodies.
